The Junior Reserve Officer Corps (JROTC) program is conducting a canned food drive as part of the Service Learning Program now until Wednesday, November 15th. All of the food that is collected will be turned into the local food bank and distributed to families in the Grand Prairie area who cannot afford food this upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
“This is a great opportunity for teenagers to be able to make a difference in other peoples lives this holiday season,” Chief Tom Knedler said.
Even though this service project is voluntary, JROTC feels that every cadet should want to participate.
“Of course this event for JROTC is voluntary and all cadets have a choice to participate, but we have learned and feel like we should serve others” sophomore Olivia Contreras said.
Each “company” or JROTC class period has a donation box and keeps track of all the food collected. The company with the most food collected will have a pizza party to reward them for their outstanding help.
“We provide food to more than 200 partner agencies in 13 countries,” Chief Knedler said. “It is important that we collect as many canned foods as we can.”
Although this event is being used to help families in the Grand Prairie area, JROTC programs across the nation contribute to the Service Learning Program
“There’s no canned food drive like the JROTC’s,” senior Damarcus King said proudly.
