The English III classes recently started doing a poetry project called Poetry Out Loud! The unit encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation and helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn.
“Poetry is never meant to sit on a page,” English III teacher Ms.Pfaff said.
With Poetry Out Loud!, students are focused on memorizing a specific poem and reciting it in front of others. After presentations in the classroom, “winning” students will compete in a major competition where they will recite their poem in front of a crowd for the possibility of winning a prize and moving onto the state competition.
“In my 12 years of doing Poetry Out Loud!, I have found that some students really enjoy it,” Pfaff said. “Students better understand poetry by picking a pome they relate to and performing it.”
Some students don’t feel the same way.
“Honestly, I don't really like the idea of reading out loud and trying to remember these lines,” junior Halie Malone said. “It can get very stressful at times.”
The school-wide competition will be Tuesday, November 28th in the new lecture hall. Students are encouraged to come watch the performances and cheer on their friends competing.
