With a variety of extracurricular programs, students are able to express themselves in different ways. One of these programs is Mariachi Azul, which is one of the most successful and popular programs.

Focused on creating and encouraging musicians that wish to flourish in this traditionally filled genre, mariachi has become a way to gain confidence and to believe more in herself.

“We got sweepstakes at UIL last year, which is something Grand Prairie High School hasn’t done in a long time,” sophomore Andrea Lucio said.

Mariachi Azul students competed Saturday Nov. 4 in the TMEA All Region Competition against students from arts magnet high schools, as well as regular high schools from the Dallas area. Nine students made it into the All Region mariachi and 1 Alternate.
