After 36 years in high school coaching and serving as president of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association for two years, head baseball coach Jon Rustenhaven has been chosen to participate in the annual THSBCA All-Star Game this summer.

The game will take place at Dell Diamond, home of the Texas Rangers AAA Farm Club, and will feature high school players from all over the state of Texas. Rustenhaven will be coaching the North 5A-6A team and will be going up against Chad Berry, a head baseball coach at Aledo High School.

“I am very excited to be chosen to coach this team,” Rustenhaven said. “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a great way to finish a career in coaching.”

The team will be selected in May without any coach’s input on who shouldl be chosen. However, Rustenhaven is confident each player will be very talented.

“There is really not much to prepare for this game. The third weekend of June I will meet the players, organize one practice, watch a skills competition amongst the players from both teams and then make out a lineup.

There isn’t much strategy to the all-star game. I will meet the players, organize one practice, watch a skills competition amongst the players from both teams and then make out a lineup,” Rustenhaven said.

The game is designed to be a showcase for the players’ talents, not the coaches. However, Rustenhaven enjoys his time on the field either way.

“Baseball is a game I grew up playing,” he said. “It is the hardest team sport for any athlete to master and that’s why our players successes are so satisfying to me as a coach.”
