February is Black History Month and Coach Jones is assuring that Grand Prairie is celebrating in big ways.
“This year, there is an essay contest that Ms.Ware is in charge and an art contest that Ms. Allen has headed up,” Jones said. “The staff is also having a potluck with soul food at the end of the month and Mr. Seyon and Mrs. Walker are in charge of that.”
In addition to funa activities, jones also wants to focus on history.
“Go_4News is broadcasting an autobiography about famous African American everyday and Ms. Jamerson and Mrs. Williams are having a panel discussion in Chambers.
Black History Month may have the word “black,” but students should not assume it’s just for African Americans in general.
“Anyone and everyone is welcome to join in on all the activities that are going around. It’s targeted to all students of Grand Prairie,” Jones said.
This isn’t the first year they are going this. For the past 26 years, there have been programs and activities to commemorate the event.
“We’ve had speakers come from the past like Dr. Alexander, the superintendent of GPISD. We’ve also had an AASO (African American Student Organization).
Our generation doesn’t really focus on Black History that much like we should.
“You know, years ago I asked a student who freed the slaves and to my great disappointment, the student said ‘Martin Luther King.’’ Like the holocaust we must never forget,” Jones said. ““We need to focus so that we can know our family, staff and students better and the whole month we should be adding some black history curriculum to our lesson.”
