Mariachi will be performing at the annual Texas Music Educators Association Convention
February 14-17 after being invited due to their commitment to promoting excellence in music education. This is the first time a school from Grand Prairie has been asked to attend TMEA.
“We’re going to perform for a bunch of music educators,” junior Angela Segura said. “Our director is really stressed because we were one of the few schools invited.”
The purpose of TMEA is to provide professional growth opportunities and encourage interaction among music education professionals. It also helps foster public support for music in schools and offer quality musical experiences for students.
“I’m proud of my students and I know they’ll do well,” director Mr. Garcia said. “They have put in a lot of work and effort.”
This is no doubt a special opportunity to the students going and they are enthusiastic and looking forward to attending.
“I’m excited because I get to make memories with friends who are here and it’s an honored to have been picked,” Segura said. “It’s also exciting because you know, it’s not fine arts academy.”
While at the TMEA Convention, Mariachi will be performing one showcase in front of the judges.
“I just wanna play good and keep the tempo in check,” Segura said.
Despite the big occasion, students going aren’t nervous or worried. If anything they’re confident they’ll do great because they’ve already been picked.
“I’m not really nervous. I’m actually confident that we’ll do good,” Segura said.
