The wrestling team has recently caught the attention of students and staff members as they continue to qualify and place in tournament competitions. Most recently, senior Jose Ruiz and junior Marvin Hunley placed at the Bowie Tournament and four girls qualified for the State competition in Houston. Sophomore Kailyn Clay and junior Magdalena "Bri" Meraz were named Regional Champions. Senior Ludivi Flores placed fourth and junior Melissa Allen placed fifth.

“Winning my matches was a good feeling and it let me know that all the practice put into wrestling really paid off,” Hunley said.

There is no doubt that wrestling is a very intense sport and takes lots of practice. All of the members of the wrestling team attends practice in the SAC after school and work hard for about three hours. With all the hard work done there has been many wrestlers who has placed in state.

“If the opportunity ever came, I can see myself going to college for wrestling,” Clay said.

Because wrestling is not considered a major sport to many like football or basketball, we don’t hear a lot about scholarships. But every sport, of course, has a scholarship opportunities and Coach Matiana Wiley has helped students achieve that. Wiley has had a few of her past wrestlers go to college for wrestling and has helped provid many students with the will to work hard in life. Each year, the team gets better and better with many successful wrestlers being the outcome.

“My method is to always work harder than your opponent and to improve the potential of each wrestler.” Coach Matiana Wiley commented.

The state competition will take place Friday, February 23rd to Saturday, February 24th at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas.
