Seniors Ruby Bustos, Adamaris Carrillo-Benitez and Valeria Medellin are headed to state for Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) after qualifying at the Regional VASE competition at MacArthur High School last month. The mission of VASE is to recognize exemplary student achievement in the Visual Arts and the state competition will be held in in San Marcos, on April 27-28.
“We want to thank our administration and staff for their help and support,” Fine Arts Department Head Ms. Cavazos said. “The students worked hard and we are very proud to showcase their talent and effort.”
Jurors evaluate artwork using a numeric rating system based on an established rubric and look for originally of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the interpretation of the student's stated intent. A percentage of those with a Superior Rating (IV) advance to state.
“I am so excited that I qualified for state,” Medellin said. “My piece was called “Kiss” and Mr. Murrell worked with me to help me develop ideas and techniques so that I could make it the best it could be.”
In addition to the 3 state qualifiers, Visual Arts students received 44 Regional Gold Medals and 3 Area Gold Medals.
